Pilipinas '98 Launched

The Philippine Centennial Invitational International Philatelic Exhibition, dubbed as PILIPINAS '98, was held from November 05 to 09 at the Megatrend Hall, SM Megamall, Mandaluyong City. The event was launched by the National Centennial Commission as "a powerful means to communicate to the Filipino the need to give great significance to the historical events shaping the nation," says Grace Serrano-Brosas, NCC Private Sector program director and vice chairperson of the Executive Committee of PILIPINAS '98.

The exhibit helped create awareness of Centennial events, including the 100th Anniversary of the Philippine Postal Service, and several government institutions such as the Department of Foreign Affairs, Department of Public Works and highways and Philippine Navy.

The event also featured competitive exhibits by local and foreign participants, an on-the-spot stamp design contest, seminar-workshops.audio-visual presentation on philately, SelyOlympics, and exhibit booths open to the public.

With the organization of school stamp clubs nationwide, as mandated by DECS Memorandum No. 331, s. 1994, and the promotion of stamp collecting as a national hobby, school youths parcipated in the said event through the SelyOlympics, a stamp exhibition contest among school youths nationwide.
