A Stamp of Recognition for World's Teachers Dateline: 10/15/99 | Source: Patrice Vezina
For UNESCO's Deputy Director-General for Education Colin N. Power, "the issuing of a series of stamps to commemorate World Teachers' Day [...] would become an educational event and raise better awareness of the important role teachers play in the advancement of education." Education International's General Secretary Fred van Leeuwen believes "special stamps honouring teachers would represent a significant token of appreciation for their social contribution and would be of benefit to educators, education and all nations as we step into the next century." Several other representatives such as the World Bank and the Inter-Governmental Philatelic Corporation endorses a coordinated effort to publicize the important work of the millions of teachers across the globe. At the national level, several postal administrations are already considering this initiative in the selection of their philatelic programmes for coming years. It is hoped that by the time we celebrate the tenth World Teachers' Day in 2003, an important collection of "stamps of recognition" dedicated to teachers will have been issued by all countries of the world. ABdA's Personal Notes: This is a very noble thing to do. I urge the readers to advocate the issuance of teacher's stamps by writing letters and e-mails to their respective philatelic and postal administrators. It would truly be a national shame if our respective countries are not among the collection of teachers stamps for the Tenth World Teachers' Day in 2003.
